Leaves are opposite, broad-ovate to elliptic or ovate-oblong, and measure about 8–20 cm long and 5–10 cm.
Greenish flowers are borne in numerous, large, many-flowered panicles at the end of branches. Petals are linear to spoon-shape, with blunt tips. Carpels are obovate, obtuse, emarginate.
Fruits are distinctly follicular, usually 1–3 together, linear-oblong and reaching about 10 cm long; seeds are relatively large and provided with a basal ring.
Known locally as Daushir or Lokhandi in Maharashtra, the name Lokhandi comes from the Marathi word lokhand, meaning “iron.” The name refers to the climber’s exceptionally tough and flexible stems, which become strong, rope-like and difficult to break as they mature.
