Syn. Bambos arundinacea
Robust, woody culms (hollow), green turning yellowish with age; distinct nodes and internodes; often with thorns on young shoots.
Lanceolate, narrow, alternate on branches of culm.
Infrequent flowering (gregarious in cycles); small inconspicuous spikelets.
Rarely seen (bamboos mainly reproduce by rhizomes/culm cuttings). Produced only during flowering episodes (rare).
In older culms, a rare siliceous deposit called Vanshlochan or Tabasheer may form inside the hollow chambers. It is traditionally valued in Ayurveda and used in formulations such as Sitopaladi Churna.
